Models, Agents, Decision

PRESENTATION

The research activities of the MAD team (Models, Agents, Decision) concern artificial intelligence, in particular reasoning and knowledge representation, planning under uncertainty and multi-agent systems.These activities can be summarized as follows: «To enable one or more artificial agents, operating in a dynamic and uncertain environment, in interaction with human being, to learn, reason, and make decisions to carry out a mission or service.»

More specifically, we work on knowledge compilation, temporal and spatial reasoning, epistemic reasoning, planning under uncertainty, multi-agent planning, formal verification for multi-agent systems, trust and reputation in multi-agent systems, etc. The team also works on applications, especially robotics, and interface with economics, via computational social choice, with philosophy, through computational ethics, and with biology, through learning.

Our main research topics lead us to publish at IJCAI, AAAI and ECAI, as well in more specialized conferences such as ICAPS, AAMAS and KR.

RESEARCH TOPICS

Models

The Models theme focuses on time and space, preferences, and reasoning algorithms. We are interested in knowledge representation with logics, reasoning, with a particular attention paid to the representation of time and space on the one hand, and to the expressivity and algorithmics of logical fragments, on the other hand. We mainly develop formal models, for applications, and algorithms or proofs of complexity.

The Models theme deals for example with the interaction with the human being, by studying languages from the point of view of their “natural” aspect: ability to represent temporal expressions with different granularities (seconds, days, months), to convert from one to the other, or to represent fuzzy or imprecise expressions (“after dinner”). Interaction with human beings is also approached from a formal and systematic angle, in addition to work carried out on specific applications: for example, in the context of a multidisciplinary ANR project on risks in socio-economic development, or for the representation of events in a context of knowledge extraction from documents, in the context of several industrial PhD. theses with Airbus Defence & Space.

Agents

The Agents theme focuses on the formal specification and validation of autonomous agents, and on trust and manipulations in multi-agent systems. Hence, we are interested in multi-agent systems, seen both as tools that are designed and implemented, and as objects of analysis, especially in a context of strategic interactions. The tools are formal (game theory, theorem proof) and experimental (simulation).

For instance, we use theorem proof as an original approach for validation. The aim is to propose formal languages in which to describe potentially interacting agent behaviours, and tools to prove that systems implementing these specifications achieve given goals (Goal Decomposition Trees). From a systems analysis perspective, the Agents theme studies the strategic interactions between agents in decentralized systems: reputation and trust, coalition building. The approach developed here mixes formal analysis (game theory, learning) with simulation. In particular, the team has obtained results on the analysis of reputation protocols and coalition formation mechanisms, and their manipulation by malicious agents. Finally, the Agents theme is also interested in ethical issues, aiming at defining how a system composed of one or more artificial agents can be able to manage ethical conflicts and explicitly justify their choices (ETHICAA ANR project).

Decision

The Decision theme focuses on Markov decision processes (MDPs) and their extensions for autonomous decision making in uncertain environments. We focus on algorithmics, and give importance to implementation and concrete experiments. We are interested in the resolution of MDPs, which model decision making problems in uncertain (stochastic) environments, and their extensions to partially observed environments (POMDP) or to several cooperative agents (DEC-MDP and DEC-POMDP). The team has developed new techniques for solving decentralized versions, and implemented the models and algorithms in a number of concrete realizations.

For example, the team has used the DEC-POMDP models and algorithms for problems of mapping unknown areas, with multiple agents and without (explicit) communication at runtime. This work led to a real use case on robots, within the framework of an ANR/DGA (Robots Malins) challenge, for which the team was again vice-champion in 2012 (after 2011). Markovian models are also used in the framework of several CIFRE theses in collaboration with AirbusDefence & Space, for problems related to the detection of group behaviour, threat management and information gathering via sensor networks. Finally, the European project COACHES, led by the team, proposed to implement these techniques for human-service robots, whose deployment has been tested in a shopping center. Beyond the decision making problems, it raised issues in order to take into account the human in the decision-making process.

INTRODUCTION

The AMACC team is characterized by a strong cultural identity: mathematical computation. The team is interested by two generic concepts, algorithm and complexity, covering all of its research activities. It adopts complementary viewpoints. On one hand, one studies calculation models and complexity notion, through the classes of complexity. On the other hand, one works within a randomness framework, with probability models, notably using it as a tool for average-case complexity analysis.

RESEARCH TOPICS

PRESENTATION

The SAFE team carries out research activities in computer security in three areas with a continuity of theoretical aspects towards applications, mutually enriching:

– Biometrics: definition and evaluation of biometric systems, protection of biometric data.

– Security architecture and models: Network security (SDN, 5G, 6G), applied, random cryptography and information protection.

– Investigative Science (Forensics): Automatic language processing (NLP), forensic platform, protection of privacy.

In addition, the team develops numerous software programs (platforms and mobile applications) to secure transactions.

RESEARCH TOPICS

Biometrics

The biometrics theme has three historical scientific axes: the definition, the evaluation of biometric systems and the protection of biometric data.

The axis consisting of designing new biometric systems will be enriched by working on the creation of new sensors in interaction with manufacturers. The objective is thus to increase recognition performance and above all to avoid presentation attacks (gelatin copy of a fingerprint for example). Several scientific obstacles will be addressed such as updating the biometric model using a minimum of data or adapting the functioning of the system according to the user in the continuity of Abir Mehnni’s thesis (supervised by C. Rosenberger and E. Cherrier). Another aspect which will also be developed during the five-year term (with possible interactions with the Forensics theme) is the exploitation of biometric data for forensic applications and the enrichment of biometric systems with language processing (in particular recognition of an individual by its keyboard typing dynamics and a semantic analysis of the content entered).

The evaluation axis of the theme will focus on two important aspects in biometrics, namely the quality of biometric data and the evaluation of presentation attacks. The team has been working for many years on measuring the quality of biometric data on modalities such as fingerprints and veins. We also intend to extend this approach to the face and in particular to 3D reconstructions of faces, as well as to behavioral modalities (e.g. keyboard typing dynamics) which are by nature less intrusive but also less efficient. The second aspect concerns the evaluation of presentation attacks. A new thesis (Abdarahmane Wone supervised by C. Rosenberger and C. Charrier) began in October 2019 on the problem of the resistance of biometric systems to presentation attacks. The context is the certification of biometric systems using repeatable protocols. One area of work concerns the generation of biometric databases of synthetic attacks from real data using approaches based on generative adversarial networks (GAN). Brice Wandji’s thesis starting in September 2020 (supervised by C. Rosenberger and C. Charrier) addresses the same problem but on behavioral biometric data. The EVABIO software platform developed within the team aimed at automating the evaluation of biometric systems is central in this context and allows us both to collaborate with manufacturers but also to provide the team with an efficient validation tool. and automated.

There are numerous interactions with the Forensics theme, particularly when we approach the notion of personal data protection within the framework of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). The third axis of the biometrics theme concerns the protection of biometric data, including the use of original non-invertible transformation schemes. Tanguy Gernot’s thesis started in October 2019 (and supervised by Patrick Lacharme) concerns the evaluation of these transformations for the design of more robust solutions. The specificity of GREYC at the international level on this theme is very important for our industrial collaborations because these transformations allow centralized processing in compliance with the GDPR.

SECURITY ARCHITECTURES AND MODELS

This theme integrates several important aspects related to the design and validation of security architectures and models. In order to continue existing work, new attack detection methods and associated countermeasures will be developed as well as new security proofs using security primitives that can be formalized.

The first area of research concerns securing future SDN/5G/6G network technologies, via on-demand security approaches to cope with the variation in data security requirements depending on the services supported. The recruitment of the new professor Lyes Khoukhi in 2020 bringing skills in securing mobile and SDN networks (1 thesis in progress and 1 thesis defended in 2019 supervised by Lyes Khoukhi) and on the use of Blockchains (1 thesis in progress and 1 supported by Lyes Khoukhi) will make it possible to propose innovative architectures and models for SDN/5G/6G, in accordance with standardization standards and recommendations (ETSI, 3GPP, etc.). For this component, collaborations with Orange Labs will be established. What’s more, the problem of deploying security functions in Internet networks will continue to be modeled using first-order logic and graph theory, which will lead to new generic solutions, in the continuity of already existing work initiated by Jean-Marie Le Bars and Morgan Barbier. One of the security challenges lies at the junction of the physical and cyber worlds, or how it is possible to link an event in the physical world (energy distribution networks and ITS for example) and an event in the cyber world (IoT, industrial computing devices, etc.). To this end, it will be necessary to exploit a new way of managing these aspects of cybersecurity. Collaborations will be established with industrial operators (such as NXP, EDF).

A second axis will address the detection of attacks and associated countermeasures. This axis will also respond to security vulnerabilities and potential attacks against the systems and architectures studied. New models based on the exploitation of statistical biases using statistical learning or even deep learning techniques will be studied. Interactions with Theme 1 and in particular on the problems of detection of attacks by presentation could be highlighted. Countermeasure mechanisms will also be developed and combined with attack detection models, the objective of which is to respond to attacks in real time. Tests will be carried out on the forensic platform with real data linked to the Investigative Science Theme.

A third axis will focus on the study and modeling of Boolean functions for security purposes, continuing the work started by Jean-Marie Le Bars and Morgan Barbier. One of the objectives is to evaluate the security of systems based on corrective codes by studying the complexity of code theory problems; such as linking the Fuzzy Vault system and the Reed-Solomon code decoding problem. A second objective will be to determine the properties that the system data must verify so that security can be guaranteed. Indeed, the proper functioning of decoding requires that the data be well distributed in relation to the code words. Thanks to this study and the theoretical tools of corrective codes, the work will be able to focus on a formal study of the security of systems and architectures and show that security is reduced to difficult problems (NP-difficult, NP-complete) by example.

More generally, following on from the CAEN 2018 conference (Cryptography and Algorithmic Number Theory), the team is participating in the ArCoCrypt project (Arithmetic, Codes and Cryptography) with the Norman laboratories LITIS and LMNO; and JSecIN (Norman Computer Security Day).

INVESTIGATIVE SCIENCE (FORENSICS)

In our context, forensics brings together all the methods of analyzing digital traces in order to be used for investigative work in a broad manner. Digital traces can be used to profile people, identify behavior (fraud for example), to conduct an investigation either criminal (recovery of evidence in a criminal case) or in the event of an incident (identification of the reason of a failure linked for example to a virus) or finally to measure the invasion of a user’s privacy (to what extent is an individual identifiable?). This research theme corresponds to a growing interest of the team, an activity close to the biometrics theme and already covered in several theses from the past five years (thesis by Thomas Gougeon on the analysis of memory dumps or by Mathieu Valois on the security of passwords). pass). This expertise that we wish to develop will be useful for fraud detection applications (for example in the CIFRE thesis of Safa El Ayeb started in 2020 and supervised by E. Cherrier and C. Charrier), investigation within the framework of our collaboration with the gendarmerie (digital crime research section of Caen) and the IRCGN, for the identification of personal data (private life) or to better authenticate/identify an individual (in connection with the team’s Biometrics theme).

The team’s first line of research concerns automatic language processing, an essential component of the analysis of digital textual traces. With the arrival of Marc Spaniol and Emmanuel Giguet within the SAFE team, questions of automatic classification, search and automatic extraction of information will be studied through the different types of documents encountered (exchanges by email , message from discussion forums, instant conversation, mail, document, data from browser software, etc.) and through different file formats or digital traces, whether in a known format (e.g., PDF , Word, OpenDocument, …), or unknown (from carving techniques). Particular attention will be paid to the detection, analysis and linking of named entities (name, address, telephone, bank identifiers, digital identifiers, etc.) when aggregating this data.

A second line of work is the development of a forensic platform for the implementation or evaluation of digital trace analysis methods. We will capitalize on the professional knowledge of Emmanuel Giguet (former judicial expert for the Caen Court of Appeal for 10 years, specialized in the fight against child pornography). We will develop solutions for extracting information, exploring large heterogeneous collections, analyzing logs and even approaches linking digital identity and the real identity of individuals. The analysis of societal interactions in cyber space should allow us to better understand the mutual dependencies between Web content and the users who create and access it. Based on trust models (attack detection, primitives, etc.) developed in the team’s Security Architectures & Models theme, a varied solution for analyzing network packets (behavioral analysis of data flows, analysis of sources of IP packets, etc.) can also be integrated into this unifying platform.

Finally, we also wish to continue working in the field of personal data protection by continuing our participation in the APVP conference (program committee and scientific contribution) and jointly with the field of biometric data protection of the Biometrics theme. The scientific contributions in the first two areas of work will allow us to respond to privacy protection issues: can I identify the author of a document or a tweet? Do technical data (IP packet) or media allow personal information about an individual to be revealed?

FacePad3D 2024 – 2026: Detection of facial presentation attacks. This project is funded by the Campus Cyber transfer program and is conducted in collaboration with the company OneVisage.

IANEC 2024 – 2025: Investigation of contemporary writers’ digital archives, funded by the Ministry of Culture, with IMEC as a cultural partner. This project aims to develop dedicated digital investigation tools leveraging advances in artificial intelligence to automate the analysis of these contemporary digital archive collections.

PEPR Cybersecurity COMPROMIS 2024 – 2029: The COMPROMIS project is based on a modern vision of multimedia data protection, with deep learning. This project defends the idea that the protection of multimedia data must necessarily be associated with the security of the tools that analyze this data, i.e. today’s Artificial Intelligence (AI). The observation is simple: multimedia data protection is undoubtedly the area of cybersecurity that has benefited most from AI, but it has neglected to verify the security level of this new tool. AI has become one of the weak links in multimedia data protection. Team leader: Bertrand CUISSART

The team considers the entire data processing chain as its object of study and focuses on imposing fine-grained control on this process. In addition, we explore the ability to integrate external constraints, whether legal, ethical or physical. Our work revolves around three themes: control over the data, managing the search for the optimal model, and the intelligibility of the resulting model.

RESEARCH TOPICS

Controlling the data

Since learning from data is typically modeled as an optimization problem, its resolution requires access to a reliable representation of the target reality. CoDaG is interested in cases where this reference is problematic by focusing on three research topics: unsupervised evaluation, the measurement of inter-rater agreement, and the use of ontologies to assess data quality.

Directing the search for the best model and the best solutions

Constraint programming, optimization and data mining are at the heart of the data processing process. On the one hand, constraint and combinatorial optimization methods are used to declare and solve data mining tasks. On the other hand, data can provide information that can improve a constraint resolution process. As a result, the development of methods that hybridize these three domains is attracting increasing interest in the communities concerned.

Understanding and manipulating the resulting models

CoDaG is interested in the interactive consideration of user preferences in the data analysis process. This interaction can go in two directions. One can envisage an interaction from the system towards the user: a user acquires new knowledge from the results returned by the system. In the other direction, an interaction from the user towards the system: the system learns a user’s preferences based on a compromise between criteria derived from their feedback. The form that user feedback can take and how exactly it is exploited remain open subjects of study.

The Image team’s research activities focus on the development of new methods for processing and analyzing signals/images/videos or discrete data, with a focus on removing theoretical, algorithmic, methodological and practical barriers. Several of these methods are applied to the resolution of concrete problems, benefiting in particular from collaborations with Norman research centers in biomedical imaging.

RESEARCH TOPICS

TS1: Multimodal Data Analysis and Processing

This theme deals with the study and development of “low-level” algorithms for the analysis and processing of multimodal data (signals, images, videos and texts). The common scientific basis of these algorithms is based on variational methods, inverse problems, PDEs, optimal transport, non-local patching methods, algorithms defined on graphs, and multivariate mathematical morphology.

TS2: Optimization and Statistical Learning

This theme focuses on the theoretical study of non-convex optimization algorithms for statistical learning. In particular, we try to formalize mathematically the fusion of physical models and training data for the improvement of machine learning performances.

TS3: Computer Vision and Recognition

This theme explores the use of “high-level” algorithms based on machine learning and neural and neural networks for pattern and structure recognition in image/video data, data defined on the image/video data, graph-based data, or textual data.

TA1: Health-Biology

This theme focuses on image processing methods, which take the form of application collaborations with regional health actors: MRI image processing (with the Cyceron centre, the Caen University Hospital), microscopy and decision support in cancer (with the Cyceron center, the Caen University Hospital), microscopy and decision support in cancerology (with the François Baclesse François Baclesse cancer center, CHPC in Cherbourg), hadrontherapy (ARCHADE program in Caen) (ARCHADE program in Caen), accessibility for the blind (LPCN Caen, association (LPCN Caen, CecitiX association, Starnav company), or the early detection of mental disorders (EPSM Caen).

TA2: Heritage Valorization

This theme brings together work that aims to process raw data from image acquisition campaigns of heritage works in 2D, 3D and multispectral. With the work in image and point clouds and collaborations with researchers in SHS, the team has acquired skills in the field of heritage enhancement to facilitate accessibility for historians, curators, researchers and for the visually impaired or blind. We intend to continue We intend to continue this interdisciplinary work, in particular within the framework of the regional NUMNIE-2 program in connection with the MRSH or within the framework of national or international programs.

TA3: Computational Photography and Artistic Imaging

This theme covers the use of algorithmic methods for the retouching of digital photographs and videos, as well as assistance in artistic creation. The expertise of the team in the field of analysis and synthesis of photographs (in particular with our recent work on generative antagonistic networks), coupled with the growing popularity of the G’MIC software platform, developed in the team and used by photographers and illustrators around the world, make this an application theme with great potential. The work of this theme builds a natural theoretical link between the themes TS1 and TS3.

ELECTRONICS TEAM

Team leader : Laurence MECHIN

The “Electronics” team works on various research activities on advanced electronic components and high-sensitivity sensors, ranging from materials to devices and systems. Measured quantities include magnetic field, electric field, infrared and X-ray radiation, temperature and gas. The team’s expertise in measurement engineering can answer a variety of scientific, societal, industrial or cultural questions such as health, environment, non-destructive testing and device physics.

The team is organised in 3 axes:

Axis 1: Physics of semiconductor devices: noise, temperature, electronic defects

Axis 2: Functional oxides: from thin films to sensors

Axis 3: Complex measurement and detection systems: noise, sensors, instruments, applications

RESEARCH TOPICS

AXIS 1 : PHYSICS OF SEMICONDUCTOR COMPONENTS : NOISE, TEMPERATURE, ELECTRONIC DEFECTS

The performance of electronic components can be degraded by the presence of defects induced by technological manufacturing processes, by imposed electric fields and/or by ionizing radiation depending on the application. We have developed the necessary skills to characterize these defects by low-frequency noise measurements, pulsed electrical measurements and/or DLTS measurements. The study of low-frequency noise is also used as a non-destructive diagnostic tool to predict the quality and reliability of future electronic components. Components can be damaged by thermal effects. Original techniques are developed to estimate their heating, in particular by Raman spectroscopy.

The research activities are carried out in the framework of an international collaboration with imec (Leuven, Belgium) and also with local (CIMAP, CRISMAT, EAMEA), national (GPM Rouen, IEMN Lille) and industrial partners (III-V lab Marcoussis, Thales Land & Air Systems, Murata).

AXIS 2: FUNCTIONAL OXIDES: FROM THIN FILMS TO SENSORS

The activities in this area are aimed at exploiting the particular physical properties of functional oxide thin films. The objectives are on the one hand to realize magnetic and radiation sensors and on the other hand the study of heterostructures and defects in these oxides in order to eventually design new sensors. Thin oxide layers are mainly deposited within the GREYC either by pulsed laser ablation or by sputtering.

The research activities are carried out within the framework of international collaborations with IMDEA (Madrid, Spain), SISSA (Trieste, Italy), IOM-CNR (Trieste, Italy), University of Cornell (USA) and also with local (CIMAP, CRISMAT, EAMEA), national (IEMN – Lille, Synchrotron Soleil – Saclay) and industrial partners (III-V lab Marcoussis, Thales Land & Air Systems, Murata).

AXIS 3 : COMPLEX SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT AND DETECTION: NOISE, SENSORS, INSTRUMENTS, APPLICATIONS

Axe 3 is interested in the study of complex measurement and detection systems with 3 themes: high sensitivity magnetic sensors, electric field sensors and smart detectors. The research carried out has in common a systemic approach to the problems. The analysis and implementation of sensors as well as applications require simultaneous consideration of the physical quantities of the system, noise, non-linearities, digital and / or analog signal processing and technological limitations of the components. The system approach makes it possible to link the entire sensitive element to the application.

The research activities are carried out within international collaborations with Virgina Tech andOffice Naval Research (USA), Darpa (USA), Polytechnique Montreal (Canada), NIST Boulder (USA), LIMMS/CNRS IIS (Tokyo, Japon) and also with local (LCS), nationaux (IEMN – Lille, Synchrotron Soleil – Saclay) and indusctrial partners (Corrodys, Chauvin Arnoux).
